Technical Services

Reviews

A technology review of residential gas fuelled appliances in Canada has been conducted for the Efficiency and Alternative Energy Branch (EAEB) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to provide statistical and technological information about residential energy-using equipment, in order to help EAEB in establishing minimum efficiency standard levels that are technologically attainable. The review is categorized by appliance type and provides baseline information, recent technological improvements and emerging technologies of the future.

  • Test Method Development

CGRI has applied Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling to aid in the desgin of a more accurate standards test sample probe.

  • Quick Response Troubleshooting

Reported field failures of high temperature (Type BH) plastic vent systems used for venting mid-efficiency (80% AFUE) appliances have led to a Canadian embargo of these vent systems. CGRI has taken a lead position for remediation of these issues through a Gas Technology Canada sponsored research program. A variety of other research programs on plastic vents are ongoing at CGRI, including the evaluation of alternative vent systems for plastic vent replacement through sponsorship from the Gas Research Institute in Chicago, and Consumers Gas Limited.

  • Appliance Life Cycle Evaluation

The life expectancy of an appliance is a critical factor in establishing product rental rates that provide a profitable return to companies such as gas utilities. The CGRI appliance life-cycle evaluation program investigates issues such as appliance performance, reliability, serviceability, fitness for use, operating cost and risk failure analysis.

  • Appliance Pre-certification Evaluation

The CGRI appliance pre-certification program is designed to provide R&D assistance to gas appliance and equipment manufacturers with new products. The evaluation program is focused on providing engineering guidance for compliance with test protocols specified by International Approval Services (IAS) for unified Canadian and U.S. certification. This program is valuable to manufacturers in helping them meet market entry targets and avoid costly delays associated with failure to comply with certification requirements.

  • Environmental Services

CGRI is an active player in Federal Government strategies for the reduction of emissions. Capabilities at the Institute include measurement of harmful gases (NOx, VOCs, CO, etc.) from gas-fired appliances and analysis of statistical data. CGRI expertise in this area has provided valuable assistance to appliance manufacturers in meeting regulatory NOx compliance levels. Other areas of expertise include appliance recycling programs and controls for methane emissions.

  • Field Testing and Demonstration

CGRI cooperates with a number of gas utilities to assist in field testing, demonstration and market entry of new products.

  • Patents and Licensing

CGRI has extensive experience with the Patenting, Licensing and Commercialization procedures required for new technology developments and is prepared to assist manufacturers in developing appropriate patent and licensing arrangements.
